Cuba became an independent republic on May 20, 1902, four years after coming under US control following the Spanish-American War. Tomás Estrada Palma, who became the island’s first president that year, is pictured at left. Col. Leonard Wood, who was the US-appointed Governor General of Cuba from 1899 to 1902, is on the right. Henry G. Squiers, first Minister of the United States to Cuba, is pictured in the center.
