Today In Latin American History

The British nuclear-powered submarine HMS Conqueror sunk the Argentine cruiser ARA General Belgrano on May 2, 1982, killing over 300 men. The day’s deaths amounted to over half of Argentina’s total losses during the Falklands War. Interestingly, the Belgrano was a former American ship which had seen action in World War II under the name USS Phoenix.
