  • 1847: Invading US troops face off against the Mexican army in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila during the Battle of Buena Vista, part of the Mexican-American War.
  • 1908: Former Venezuelan president Rómulo Betancourt is born in the country’s coastal Miranda state.
  • 1913: Former Mexican president Franciso I. Madero is assassinated in Mexico City during a successful coup d’état orchestrated by Victoriano Huerta at the time of the Mexican Revolution.
  • 1979: The Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia gains independence from the United Kingdom.
