The so-called New Laws, issued by Charles V during the early part of the colonial period, were meant to protect the rights of the indigenous people of the Americas during the Spanish conquest. The New Laws led to a large outcry among the European encomenderos in the New World, and were suspended after revolt spread throughout the South American colonies, leading to the overthrow and assassination of the Viceroy of Peru in 1546.
