Baptista Boazio, 1589, Route of Drake’s Voyage

In the year 1585, the pirate Sir Francis Drake sailed out of Cape Verde in Western Africa destined for the Caribbean, where he sacked the Spanish colonial ports of Cartagena de Indias (in present-day Colombia), Santo Domingo (in present-day Dominican Republic) and San Agustín (in present-day Florida, USA). His trip was mapped and illustrated by the London-based Italian cartographer Baptista Boazio. Boazio’s map of San Agustín (not shown here) is one of the earliest printed European depictions of any place in what later became the United States of America.
