Today In Latin American History Pioneering Puerto Rican Major League Baseball player Roberto Clemente died in an airplane accident on December 31, 1972 while en route to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame the following year.
